Ingredients

  • 3 to 3.5 cups all-purpose flour bread flour works too
  • 2 tablespoons vegan sugar granulated or coconut sugar
  • 1 package instant yeast 2¼ teaspoons
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1.25 cups warm water 105-110°F
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter melted, for topping
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder plus extra salt for sprinkling

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 3 cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add warm water and olive oil. Mix until mostly combined, adding more flour if needed to form a slightly sticky dough.
  2. Grease the bowl and place dough inside. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 90 minutes or until doubled in size.
  3. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each into a 9-10 inch rope. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet, 2 inches apart.
  4. Cover and let rise for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) during the last 30 minutes.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove and immediately brush with melted vegan butter. Sprinkle with garlic powder and salt.

Notes

  • Water temperature is crucial: too hot kills yeast, too cool won't activate it properly
  • Dough should be soft and slightly sticky for best texture
  • Don't skip the second rise for puffy breadsticks
  • Brush with garlic butter while still hot for maximum flavor absorption
  • Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days
