Ingredients

Ingredients
  • Egg Noodles: 2 cups, uncooked.
  • Lean Ground Beef: 1 pound.
  • Onion: 1 medium, chopped.
  • Garlic: 2-3 cloves, minced.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: 1 tablespoon.
  • Italian Seasoning: 1/4 teaspoon.
  • All-Purpose Flour: 1/4 cup.
  • Beef Stock: 2 cups.
  • Salt & Pepper: To taste.

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Large skillet or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon

Method

Instructions
  1. Cook the Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the egg noodles and cook according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Brown the Beef and Onion: While the noodles cook, place the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook for about 8-10 minutes, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain off most of the excess fat, leaving a little in the pan for flavor.
  3. Add Aromatics: Reduce the heat to medium. Stir in the minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and Italian seasoning. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
  4. Make the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture. Stir well to combine and cook for another 2 minutes to toast the flour.
  5. Create the Sauce: Gradually pour in the beef stock, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for 5-10 minutes, or until it has thickened to your desired consistency. If it gets too thick, you can add a small splash more of stock.
  6. Combine and Serve: Add the cooked and drained egg noodles to the skillet with the beef sauce. Stir everything together until the noodles are well-coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot and enjoy immediately.

Notes

For the best flavor, get a deep brown color on the beef. Toasting the flour for a full two minutes gets rid of any raw taste. Use a good quality beef stock, as its flavor is key to the sauce. Let the sauce simmer gently to thicken properly, and don't forget to taste and adjust the seasoning at the end.
